At an altitude of 1,326m, Briançon is the highest town in Europe and as well as providing a great base for winter-sports is a wonderful destination in itself.  Briançon is dominated by the 17th century fortifications of the old town and several surrounding forts making it one of the most spectacular locations in the Alps.  The town has its own ski-lift which connects the town to the larger resort of Serre Chevalier.
