Serre Chevalier and Deux Alpes has witnessed more snow, and this time its descended to the valley floor. Yesterday (25th Oct) we awoke in Serre Chevalier to a blanket of white that stretched from the top of Pic De L'Yret at 2830m to the valley floor in Briancon; not that we could see the peaks of course, the velocity of flakes descending made that all but impossible, we did, however, have it on good authority.
This time the cold weather front had moved up from the Mediterranean with the Southwestern regions of the Alps, Serre Chevalier and Deux Alpes seeing a lot of the coverage. What started out as an optimistic sprinkle on Monday evening soon turned into the type of downpour we're more used to seeing later in the year, something that would make taking a reliable Turin airport transfer seem the sensible option. By yesterday morning a heavy blanket had created a winter wonderland and the snow showed little signs of abating causing much excitement in the office and a high level of anticipation for the upcoming season.
The higher slopes have had sporadic dusting's of snow in the last few weeks but this is by far the heaviest seen to date. It came at the perfect time for Deux Alpes which opened the Glazier 3800m last Saturday (22nd Oct). A couple of days of steady snowfall the previous week meant the conditions were better than expected for the opening which coinsided with the French half term. Comfortable and reliable Grenoble airport transfers are available for those considering a few pre-season practice sessions in the next few weeks.
As one of the hundreds that turned up on the opening day, I was very much appreciative of the extra covering as it made for a cushier landing when my legs eventually did give up on me at the end of a long but fantastic day. Note to self, start pre-season fitness regime asap.
Looking out of the window this morning the snow is gradually receding back up the mountain as expected and the sun is shining again. Beyond this week the forecast is looking cold, if not particularly snowy. This is backed by both the UK's and France's weather forecasters who all predict below average temperatures leading up to the new season, fingers crossed the snow will appear on cue.
So here are a few webcam images to get you all as excited as we are. I'm now going to go and wax my board but as the famous festive number goes, 'Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!'
