Another year, another Tour de France. As the days grow warmer and longer thoughts turn to the upcoming summer season here in the Alps. Not just famed for it's exceptional skiing terrain, Serre Chevalier is also renowned for its summer season too with both mountain biking and road cycling featuring heavily in the region.
Last July saw the 98th Tour de France include the Col du Galibier for the first time in 100 years. To honour this centenary organisers of the race arranged that the Col du Galibier would be climbed twice with just 24 hours for the cyclists to catch their breath between ascents. Cyclists were tasked with reaching the summit on the Tour's 18th stage, the highest finish in it's history at an incredible altitude of 2,645 metres.
The Col du Galibier will unfortunately not be featured in this year's Tour. However, that should not stop keen cyclists from enjoying one of the most challenging stages in the Tour's history for themselves. Those that tackle this difficult stage will be rewarded by stunning views over the valley and across to the glacial summits of the Meije. Visiting the valley during the summer season is a popular holiday destination for many cycling enthusiasts, many returning year after year on one of our Grenoble airport transfers.
Conquer the Col du Galibier and you may feel like tackling the Col d'Izard (2361 km). Starting in Briancon your route takes you up 1141m along forest lined roads until you emerge at the summit and behold panoramic views of Briancon and the Queyras region. Continue down into the Casse Déserte and into the very heart of the Alps.
The 99th Tour will run from the 30th June till the 22nd of July and cover a total of 3,479km. It will include nine flat stages, four medium mountain stages, five mountain stages, two individual time-trial stages and one prologue. Six stages will be hosted in the stunning French Alps, Serre Chevalier's closest stage is Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne which takes place on Friday the 13th July, located about 1h30min away. For further on how to reach Serre Chevalier on a Grenoble airport transfer please visit the website or contact Alpine Transfer Company direct on Tel: +33 685 687 131.
